When does a concert become available in the archive?

After a live broadcast, we need about five to seven days to edit the video and audio material and make the recording available in the concert archive. For co-productions or third-party productions such as the Europakonzert, the New Year’s Eve Concert or concerts at the Waldbühne, post-production can take a little more time.

Are live streams repeated?

Live broadcasts are usually repeated the following day at 12:00 or 13:00 Berlin time. You will find the repeat in the detailed view of the corresponding live concert. If the repeat is not displayed in your app, it can unfortunately not be played on your device. We apologise for any inconvenience.

What image and sound format are the concerts broadcast in?

Since the 2017/18 season, we have been offering our archive concerts in 4K UHD. Currently, this quality is supported on the following devices: concerts in 4K UHD . In 2021, the Digital Concert Hall became the world’s first streaming service to combine an ultra-high definition (UHD) video signal with a lossless transmitted audio signal in authentic studio quality. Initially, Hi-Res Audio (lossless audio) is only being offered for archive concerts; in the future it will also be available for live concerts from the Philharmonie Berlin. What is Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos)?

In the Philharmonie Berlin, the unique sound of the Berliner Philharmoniker meets an important component of the musical experience: space. It is precisely this spatial experience that we want you to feel directly. We achieve this by recreating the spatiality of the auditorium with a complex algorithm when mixing the sound signal. And since every musical work has a different line-up and the instrumental groups are not always seated in the same place on stage, we create each mix with individual parameters for each individual work. An important role is played here by an upmix process specially adapted to the Philharmonie Berlin, which was developed by sound engineer Benedikt Schröder and, in collaboration with Andreas Wolf, is used to mix the concerts in the Digital Concert Hall. This then converts the concert recordings in stereo into Dolby Atmos 7.1.4. The new Immersive Audio sound format is available at no extra cost.

How can I enjoy concerts in Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos) on my computer?

Our website currently supports Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos) for certain Apple devices which have MacOS version 10.15 (Catalina) or higher installed. You also need Safari as your browser. With this set-up, you can select the desired audio quality directly in the video player via the cogwheel icon. Your selection is saved for the corresponding device until you change it again.

How can I enjoy concerts in Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos) on my smartphone/tablet?

Your smartphone or tablet needs to be one of our supported devices and have the latest version of our app installed. You can select the desired audio quality directly in the video player via the cogwheel icon. Your selection is saved for the corresponding device until you change it again. In addition, you can find this setting option in your user account under the menu item Settings → Audio quality. For an optimal experience, you should use Dolby Atmos-enabled headphones. With an iPhone or iPad, you can also stream a concert to another Dolby Atmos-compatible device using Apple Airplay. This function is not yet available with Google Chromecast.

How can I enjoy concerts in Immersive Audio (Dolby Atmos) on my TV?

Your TV or streaming media player needs to be a device supported by us and have the latest version of our app installed. You can select the desired audio quality directly in the video player via the cogwheel icon. Your selection is saved for the corresponding device until you change it again. In addition, you need a connected soundbar or A/V receiver that supports Dolby Atmos and an HDMI connection with the addition ARC or eARC. Some TV sets also already have built-in speakers that support Dolby Atmos.

Your technical devices must meet certain requirements in order for you to be able to enjoy the new Immersive Audio sound format. The following devices enable you to enjoy concerts in three-dimensional sound: TVs and streaming players Dolby Atmos technology is not integrated in some TV sets. However, Immersive Audio can still be delivered in combination with an appropriate external audio device. Due to the large number of different manufacturers, we recommend that you find out the appropriate combinations for your device for yourself. Android TV and Google TV Android TV and Google TV from version 9 support Dolby Atmos technology. As a result, streaming media players with Android TV or Google TV version 9 or higher also support Immersive Audio when connected to an external Dolby Atmos-capable audio system. Apple TV Apple TV 4K devices with the operating system tvOS 13.4 or higher support Immersive Audio. Chromecast Chromecast devices with Google TV support Immersive Audio when connected to a Dolby Atmos-enabled TV or sound system. Chromecast devices without Google TV cannot stream Immersive Audio. Can I watch concerts in 4K UHD?

Since the 2017/18 season, our archive concerts have also been available in 4K UHD quality. 4K UHD is currently available via our website on certain Apple devices: on mobile devices from iOS 11 and the Safari browser and on Mac devices from version 13 of the Safari browser. What does lossless audio mean?

Streaming music requires the transfer of large amounts of data. With the usual streaming methods, these are reduced in size by omitting “inaudible” components of the audio files. The sound quality Hi-Res Audio, on the other hand, uses a different method of compression in which the audio signal is transmitted without loss. You can now use your app settings to select the sound quality in which you would like to hear the Berliner Philharmoniker. Currently, if your device supports this sound quality, you can listen to all content from the Digital Concert Hall archive in Hi-Res Audio. Our audio qualities in comparison: Standard Stereo 48 kHz · 320 kbit/s · AAC Hi-Res S tereo 48 kHz / 48 kHz 24-bit · 2.304 kbit/s · FLAC PCM At a later date, the live broadcasts from the Philharmonie Berlin will also be broadcast in Hi-Res Audio.

The audio signal cannot be transmitted loss-free via wireless headphones with a Bluetooth connection.

Are the concerts also available on CD/DVD/Blu-ray?

Some of our concerts are available as CD/DVD/Blu-ray in the Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings online shop . All other recordings are produced exclusively for the Digital Concert Hall and can only be accessed here. Further recordings are not possible for legal reasons.

Can I record the concerts?

For reasons of copyright, it is not permitted to record concerts in the Digital Concert Hall.
